Chocolate Cupcakes with Vanilla Bean Buttercream Frosting

By far my favorite chocolate cupcake recipe! This version of a chocolate cake is rich and moist due to the melted unsweetened chocolate that is incorporated into the ingredients. Great for any occasion! (Cake stand is from Home Goods, you can find a similar one at any kitchen store)
Chocolate Cupcakes with Vanilla Buttercream Frosting Recipe
Prep Time: 20 min. | Cook Time: 35 min. | Yield: 48 cupcakes


  • 2 3/4 cake flour 
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda 
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder 
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt 
  • 2 1/2 cups granulated sugar 
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter 
  • 6 oz. unsweetened chocolate (melted and cooled to room temp.) 
  • 4 eggs 
  • 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 
  • 1 cup sour cream 
  • Vanilla Bean Buttercream Frosting 


  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees line 48 muffin cups with cupcake liners Set aside. 
  2. In a large bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Set aside. 
  3. In a stand mixer, mix the sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Add chocolate and mix until well combined. Add eggs one at a time. Add sour cream and vanilla and mix until well combined. 
  4. With the mixer on low speed, add flour mixture in 3 parts, alternating with 1 cup of water. Beat until just well combined. 
  5. Fill muffin cups about 3/4 full. Bake for 10 minutes, then take out and rotate in the oven. Bake for another 10 minutes. Let cool completely until frosting.
